Boredom is important.

When was the last time you felt bored?

Just before moving forward, one thing that I would like to clear is the ideas that are in this article aren’t solely mine. This article is a mishmash of ideas and thoughts collected from podcasts, books and articles.

It’s hard to remember the last time i felt bored. Usually these days, the natural response to boredom is swiping though Instagram stories, skimming through Youtube feed or swiping on Tinder(mostly right swipes 😆). We have replaced boredom with social media and entertainment.

What’s wrong with that? you might ask. Is it wrong to watch cute cat video while waiting in a queue at the food joint? No it’s not and i am not here to tell you what you should do with your time. It’s your time after all.

What i am trying to suggest is boredom is important. Being bored is an important state of mind, because that’s when you think about yourself and the environment around you. That’s when you observe the world around you and new ideas emerge.

My experience with boredom

For me, boredom helps me reset and look at the bigger picture. Where in life am I right now, what am I doing with my time and where do I want to go with my life in the future and why would i want to go there? I think boredom allows me to have meaningful and deep conversations with myself.

One of the outcomes of these deep conversations was that i learnt to prioritise tasks and this has helped me big time. I was able to complete an early Alpha for one of my side projects (now actively working on the Beta release) because i prioritised it over other tasks. So indirectly boredom helped me complete my side project.

Closing thoughts

Don’t deprive your mind from the state of boredom. Boredom is when your mind starts thinking and observing things around you. That’s when ideas occur to you.

Thanks for reading and Happy New Year! 🥳
